Prices of food products, including wheat and pulses, have been blamed for the spurt in inflation, which touched a two-year high of 6.7 per cent in January. Later this month, they will discuss a proposal to exempt rice, wheat and pulses from value added tax. Harkin also points to comments made by University of Missouri's Pat Westoff who says in a Reuters report that since crop support acreage bases have not been adequately updated, in recent times, most crops have larger acreage bases than actual plantings. The Democrat Senator, from Iowa, says the savings could then be used to make sure subsidy funds are there when farmers need them. Senator Harkin says, "I'm 99pc sure you would have a savings" if the bases were updated.
