75. Wine sales up, grapes take hit
Looking at California wine, which accounts for two out of every three bottles sold in the United States, sales were up 2 percent, to 449 million gallons, and the retail value increased nearly 8 percent, to $17. Robert Smiley, a UC Davis management professor who follows the wine industry, sees that trend as a reflection of the economy, which has been growing despite a recent housing slowdown. Total California winery shipments including international markets grew 2 percent to 541 million gallons.
