67. Woodman, spare that marbled murrelet
Members of a timber group in Oregon sued to have the marbled murrelet removed from the endangered species list there so they could cut old-growth forests. Coming, as I did, from the lodgepole and ponderosa forests of the Rockies that survive on an average annual precipitation of 13 to 17 inches, the cedar and redwood forests of the Pacific Coast are stunning. I decided to make the marbled murrelet my endangered species poster animal, so I spent last week making my way through old-growth...

68. Pipeline construction upsets landowners
The DNR allowed the pipeline to cross 757 wetlands and 242 rivers and streams, but some environmental advocates sued, contending the environmental review was inadequate. Hundreds along the pipeline's route have reached agreements that give them money for land that's temporarily needed to install the pipeline, Enbridge spokesman Dave Henderson said. According to Henderson, 1,321 landowners are affected and only 30 have not signed compensation agreements for the 100 feet of temporary work...

Together with tree warden Rosey Gerry, Brown enforces laws regarding public shade trees, which according to state law are all trees within or upon the limits of any highway. On April 11, several additional healthy trees, including oak and maples, on the property of Elizabeth Kordek, were also marked to be cut down with orange survey tape. And a resident has admitted to improperly attempting to have trees on private land cut down because, in her opinion, they block drivers lines of sight....

71. Think Globally, Act Globally
Some ideas are just so good that once you hear them explained, you wonder, Why hasn't anyone done this already? Avaaz is just such an idea, a new MoveOn-style group that will mobilize members all over the world to take action on global issues. The silver lining in the Bush Nightmare: just as he has served as a dream recruiter for the Bin Laden radical folks, so too has he motivated decent Americans on the left to stir from comfortable lifestyles of apathy-- where they (we) were formerly...
